Jake Oettinger earns his 17th career shutout as the Dallas Stars break out offensively in a 5-0 win over San Jose.
DALLAS – The Dallas Stars finally looked like the team they expected to be.
After opening the season with back-to-back losses and just one goal in their first two games, Dallas broke through in a big way Monday night with a 5-0 win over the San Jose Sharks at American Airlines Center. Jake Oettinger stopped all 13 shots he faced for his 17th career shutout, while five different Stars found the net. NHL
The victory improved Dallas to 1-2-0 and ended an ugly offensive start to the season.

Miro Heiskanen opened the scoring late in the first period, and the Stars took control from there. Joel Kiviranta made it 2-0 early in the second before Jamie Benn pushed the lead to three. Jason Robertson added another goal later in the period, and Mikko Rantanen finished the scoring in the third.
For Benn, Robertson and Rantanen, the goals were their first of the season.
The Stars also got two assists from Roope Hintz, while Benn and Robertson each finished with a goal and an assist. Dallas outshot San Jose 26-13 and spent far more time controlling the puck in the offensive zone than it had during its first two games.
“We established more zone time and played more direct, forward, and cleaned up our blue lines,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said after the game. “It’s a really simple recipe.”
It was exactly the response Dallas needed after starting 0-2-0 for the first time since 2019. The Stars had managed only one goal in losses to St. Louis and Nashville before exploding for five Monday night.

San Jose was also without captain Macklin Celebrini, who was scratched after warmups because of a lower-body injury.
Still, Dallas did what good teams are supposed to do against a shorthanded opponent: take control and never let go.
For one night, the slow start looked a lot less concerning.
