Jaxson Dart will undergo season-ending knee surgery after suffering MCL, PCL and meniscus damage in the Giants’ loss to the Rams Monday night.

The New York Giants have lost Jaxson Dart for the season, a crushing development just two games into a year that had started with considerable promise for their young quarterback.

Dart is expected to undergo surgery on his injured left knee after further testing revealed damage to his meniscus, MCL and PCL. The encouraging news is that his ACL remains intact, and the Giants expect the 23-year-old quarterback to make a full recovery in time for the 2027 season.

Dart suffered the injury during the Giants’ opening possession in Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was hit by linebacker Byron Young before colliding with Josaiah Stewart, who caught Dart low as the quarterback went to the ground.

Dart immediately grabbed his left knee and eventually left for the locker room.

Initially, there was optimism that New York had avoided a season-ending injury. Giants coach John Harbaugh said after the game that the team appeared to have escaped a “devastating outcome.” Subsequent testing, however, revealed more extensive damage than first believed.

The injury abruptly ends what had been an encouraging start to Dart’s second NFL season.

In New York’s season-opening 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding 54 rushing yards. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to open a season with at least three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and a passer rating of 130.

Now the Giants must turn to veteran Jameis Winston.

Winston struggled after replacing Dart against Los Angeles, completing just 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards with one interception. New York also has Jake Haener on its practice squad.

Harbaugh expressed confidence in Winston, but replacing Dart’s mobility and early-season production won’t be simple.

For a Giants team hoping Dart would take a major step forward in Year 2, the focus suddenly shifts from developing its franchise quarterback to getting him healthy for 2027.
