Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart could miss the remainder of the 2026 season after further evaluation revealed his knee injury may be worse than first believed.

The New York Giants may have received the news they feared most about quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Dart’s knee injury is reportedly more serious than the team initially believed, and the second-year quarterback could miss the remainder of the 2026 season. ESPN reported Tuesday that Dart is expected to be sidelined for an extended period, with season-ending surgery now among the possibilities.

No final decision has been announced.

Dart suffered the injury on the Giants’ opening possession of Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was hit while attempting a third-down pass with 11:20 remaining in the first quarter and immediately grabbed at his knee.

He left the field, entered the medical tent and eventually went to the locker room. The Giants initially listed him as questionable before ruling him out at halftime.

The early outlook sounded considerably better.

Giants coach John Harbaugh said after the game that the injury appeared to be in the “neighborhood” of an MCL sprain and expressed relief that doctors didn’t initially believe Dart had suffered a catastrophic knee injury.

“We’ll know tomorrow,” Harbaugh said when asked about the suspected MCL issue.

Further evaluation, however, has apparently raised the level of concern. ESPN reported Tuesday that the injury could require surgery and potentially end Dart’s season. The Giants have not yet publicly confirmed that Dart will undergo an operation.

That’s a massive development for a Giants team that entered 2026 expecting Dart to take another significant step forward.

Jameis Winston replaced him Monday and struggled badly, completing just 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards with an interception as New York’s offense stalled.

The Giants are now preparing for Sunday’s home game against Tennessee with Winston positioned to take over if Dart is unavailable.

For now, the distinction matters: Dart has not officially been ruled out for the season.

But what initially looked like an injury that might cost him several weeks has developed into something potentially much worse. If surgery becomes necessary, the Giants could be forced to move forward without their franchise quarterback for the remainder of 2026.
