The PGA Tour has finalized who gets into its new Championship and Challenger Series, creating a promotion-and-relegation system beginning in 2028.

The PGA Tour’s massive 2028 overhaul is becoming real, and players now know exactly what they’ll be fighting for.

Beginning in 2028, the Tour will operate two distinct levels — the PGA Tour Championship Series and PGA Tour Challenger Series — with formal promotion and relegation determining who stays at the top and who has to fight their way back.

The biggest number to remember is 90.

The top 90 players on the Championship Series points list will retain their cards for the following season. Meanwhile, 20 players from the Challenger Series will earn promotion to golf’s top tier each year.

That creates something the PGA Tour has rarely had: genuine relegation pressure.

Finish outside the safety zone, and a player could lose Championship Series status rather than simply slide down a priority ranking.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said the structure is meant to make the stakes easier for fans to follow.

“The new competitive model is designed to reward excellence and ensure there is always a clear path for top performers at every stage of their career,” Rolapp said.

Winning still carries significant power.

A Championship Series victory will provide membership for the remainder of that season plus the following two seasons, including victories at THE PLAYERS Championship and the four majors. Multiple wins during one season, however, won’t stack additional years onto the exemption.

That’s a major shift for major champions. Players winning majors in 2027 will receive Championship Series eligibility through 2029 rather than the traditional five-year PGA Tour exemption structure that has existed for major winners.

There’s also a fast lane upward.

Challenger Series players who win multiple events in the same season can earn midseason promotion. The No. 1 player in PGA Tour University will move directly to the Championship Series, while Nos. 2 through 5 will earn Challenger Series membership.

The Challenger Series will generally feature 144-player fields, with relegated Championship Series members joining players who retain Challenger status and another 20 promoted from the Korn Ferry Tour.

And for players who barely miss?

There’s one final lifeline.

A new fall “last chance” series, featuring at least four tournaments, will award Championship Series cards to its top three finishers.

The transformation starts before 2028. During the transitional 2027 season, the top 95 players in the PGA Tour standings will qualify for the inaugural Championship Series, while the top 10 Korn Ferry Tour players will also jump directly to the new top level.

For decades, PGA Tour status could be complicated to explain.

Starting in 2028, the message becomes considerably simpler:

Play well enough, move up. Stop producing, and somebody else takes your place.
