With Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders sitting, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green get the Browns’ preseason finale — and potentially a roster-deciding audition.

The Cleveland Browns have settled the top of their quarterback depth chart.

Now comes the awkward part: figuring out what to do with everybody else.

With Deshaun Watson locked in as the starter and Shedeur Sanders set as QB2, neither will play Thursday against the New England Patriots. That leaves Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green to handle the preseason finale, and for both players, the stakes are pretty obvious.

Gabriel will start. Green will follow.

That could turn Thursday night into a very real roster audition.

Browns coach Todd Monken said he’s eager to see both quarterbacks get extended work, especially Green, who has made the most of limited opportunities.

“I’m excited for Dillon and seeing Taylen,” Monken said.

Green is the more intriguing unknown.

A sixth-round pick, the 6-6, 230-pound rookie brings rare athleticism to the quarterback room. He ran for 35 touchdowns in college, and there was already speculation before camp that his size and movement skills could eventually tempt Cleveland to experiment with him elsewhere.

So far, the Browns have kept him at quarterback.

That makes Thursday important.

If Green can run the offense cleanly, create with his legs and show he’s more than a developmental athlete, he gives Cleveland another reason to keep him on the 53-man roster.

Gabriel has a different résumé.

The former third-round pick started six games for Cleveland as a rookie last season, giving the Browns a much clearer idea of what he can do. But with Watson and Sanders already ahead of him, Gabriel may now be fighting to prove there’s room for a fourth quarterback.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Monken never really opened the starting competition beyond Watson and Sanders. Gabriel and Green were always operating on a different track.

Now they finally get the stage.

Monken also said he and Patriots coach Mike Vrabel agreed not to play their starters, so this game will be about depth, development and survival.

For Gabriel and Green, that’s enough.

The Browns already know who starts Week 1.

Thursday is about who’s still standing behind them when the roster gets cut down.
