Germie Bernard has already made one of the most interesting equipment decisions of the 2026 NFL season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers rookie receiver says he plans to wear a Guardian Cap for the entire year, choosing extra protection over aesthetics as concern around football-related head trauma continues to grow.

Bernard explained the decision during an appearance on Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, and his reasoning was pretty straightforward: he’s thinking about life after football, not just life in it.

“I’m standing on it,” Bernard said. “I’m gonna wear it. Yes, the entire year.”

Bernard said conversations with his girlfriend helped push him toward the decision, especially as more information continues to emerge about the long-term effects of repeated head impacts.

“It’s not normal for our brains to be rattled for 10-plus years,” Bernard said. “So that is something that can help me in the long run. That’s how I look at it.”

That’s the part that stands out.

Guardian Caps were once mostly a practice-field sight, but they’ve become more visible as the NFL has loosened restrictions on in-game use. The padded outer shell fits over the helmet and is designed to reduce the force of certain impacts.

They’re not exactly sleek.

They’re bulky, noticeable and still look unconventional compared with a standard NFL helmet.

Bernard doesn’t seem to care.

For a young player trying to establish himself in the league, that willingness to ignore how it looks in favor of how it might help him years from now is notable.

It also reflects a larger shift around the sport.

As more current and former players talk openly about brain health, concussion history and long-term quality of life, equipment decisions that once might’ve been dismissed as unnecessary are getting a second look.

The key, of course, is making sure added protection doesn’t create a false sense of invincibility. No helmet accessory eliminates the risks associated with repeated head contact.

But Bernard clearly believes reducing that risk where possible is worth it.

And if more players follow his lead, Guardian Caps could stop looking unusual very quickly.
