Brendan Sorsby’s Texas Tech Fight Takes Sharp Turn

Brendan Sorsby’s Texas Tech eligibility fight just got uglier, and the clock is starting to feel like a blitz.

The NCAA has denied Texas Tech’s appeal to restore Sorsby for the 2026 college football season, keeping its hard-line position in place while a Texas judge decides whether to step in. That leaves the Red Raiders’ quarterback room, Sorsby’s future and one of college football’s most loaded gambling cases sitting in legal limbo.

Sorsby isn’t some random depth-chart flyer. He arrived at Texas Tech after two productive seasons at Cincinnati, where he threw for 5,613 yards, 45 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while adding 1,027 rushing yards and 18 scores in 24 games. He was viewed as one of the top quarterback prizes in the transfer portal, the kind of addition built to keep Texas Tech in the Big 12 title conversation.

Now, his season may be decided in a courtroom instead of a huddle.

The NCAA’s stance is simple and severe. Court filings say Sorsby placed thousands of wagers during his college career, including at least 40 tied to Indiana football while he was with the Hoosiers. The NCAA has argued that “his college football career has come to an end” and warned that a court-ordered comeback could bring “destabilizing ramifications.”

Sorsby’s side has pushed back by framing the issue as a mental health and addiction case. His attorneys have pointed to the pull of “predatory and addictive online gambling apps” while asking for another chance.

For Texas Tech, it’s a sudden storm at the sport’s most important position now. The next move belongs to Judge Ken Curry, who heard arguments June 1. If Sorsby doesn’t get relief soon, his fallback could be the 2026 NFL supplemental draft, with a June 22 deadline staring him down. No pressure. Just his future.
