Dallas added Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence in Round 1, giving Christian Parker’s defense two impact pieces and extra draft capital.

The Dallas Cowboys made defense the priority in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, giving Christian Parker two new pieces who can help reshape the unit immediately.

Dallas first moved from No. 12 to No. 11 to grab Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, sending Miami its first-round pick and two fifth-round selections. The move showed just how badly the Cowboys wanted one of the draft’s most versatile defensive backs.

Downs gives Dallas a high-level playmaker who can line up deep, roll into coverage, defend the run and disguise looks before the snap. For a defense trying to get faster and more flexible under Parker, that’s a big-time addition.

The Cowboys then worked the board later in the round. Dallas traded back from No. 20 to No. 23 in a deal with Philadelphia, adding two fourth-round picks and a 2027 seventh-rounder before selecting UCF pass rusher Malachi Lawrence.

Lawrence brings real upside off the edge after finishing with 11 tackles for loss and seven sacks at UCF. He won’t have to be the centerpiece right away, either. With Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark already in the front seven, Lawrence can develop inside a deeper defensive group.

That matters because Dallas entered the draft without a second-round pick. By adding extra Day 3 selections, the Cowboys gave themselves more room to target offensive line, receiver, linebacker, cornerback or more defensive depth as the draft continues.

This wasn’t a first round built around offensive fireworks. It was about fixing the defense with speed, versatility and pass rush.

For Cowboys fans, Downs and Lawrence give Dallas a clear identity shift: Parker’s defense is getting more dangerous, and the front office didn’t wait around to make it happen.
