Joel Glazer made it clear: the Buccaneers are prepared to pay Baker Mayfield as their franchise QB if his strong play continues into 2026.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear fully committed to Baker Mayfield as their long-term answer at quarterback, and owner Joel Glazer isn’t hiding it. With Mayfield entering the final season of his current deal in 2026, Glazer made it clear the franchise is ready to do what it takes to keep its starting quarterback in Tampa Bay.
That’s the kind of message Buccaneers fans want to hear.

Speaking about the rising cost of elite quarterbacks, Glazer didn’t sound hesitant at all about the idea of Mayfield cashing in on his next contract. “Obviously, the quarterback is the highest-paid position on the team, rightfully so,” Glazer said. “That means that it’s going good, so if the quarterback’s making top money, then your team is probably doing well and the quarterback’s performing well. That’s obviously a key component to success. That doesn’t hurt at all to write that check; it’s something that all the teams do when you have good quarterbacks.”
That statement says plenty about where the Buccaneers front office stands on Mayfield.
General manager Jason Licht has already indicated the team’s plans are centered around the veteran quarterback, and Glazer reinforced that idea with even stronger praise. “He’s gone above and beyond anything we could’ve asked or hoped for Baker,” Glazer said. “Everybody loves him, performs, gives 250 percent when he’s on that field and that’s all you can ask for.”

Taken together, those comments paint a pretty clear picture: the Bucs believe they’ve found their guy.
Now the focus shifts to timing. Tampa Bay can let the season play out, or it can move early and try to lock Mayfield into a new deal before his price climbs even higher. Either way, the message from ownership is unmistakable — Baker Mayfield has earned the trust of the Buccaneers, and a lucrative extension looks more like a matter of when than if.
