The Cowboys reshaped their defensive line by trading Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas, creating major questions about depth, roster strategy, and 2026 plans.
The Dallas Cowboys made one of the more surprising roster moves of the offseason by dealing away Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas, turning what looked like a position of strength into a growing question mark. For a team already facing pressure to rebound in 2026, the sudden changes at defensive tackle have shifted attention squarely onto the front office’s bigger plan.
The headline move sent Odighizuwa to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 92 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Dallas then followed with a separate move involving Thomas, sending him to the Tennessee Titans in a late-round pick swap. The result is clear: the Cowboys added draft capital, but at the cost of proven defensive line depth.

That matters because Odighizuwa was one of Dallas’ more dependable interior defenders. Moving him out of the building leaves the Cowboys thinner in the middle and puts added pressure on the remaining group. As things stand, the defensive tackle room now features Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Otito Ogbonnia, and Jay Toia. That is a much leaner group than what Dallas had before the trades.

The Cowboys did make other offseason additions, including Jalen Thompson, P.J. Locke, and a reunion with Tyrus Wheat, but those moves do not erase the concern up front. Wheat, in particular, looks more like a depth and special teams option than a player expected to carry a major defensive workload. He has logged 263 career defensive snaps and 457 special teams snaps, making him more of a roster competitor than a frontline answer.
Dallas now owns picks No. 12, No. 20, and No. 92 among its top draft assets, which gives the team flexibility. But it also creates urgency. Whether the Cowboys are clearing space for another move or simply reworking the roster in a new defensive vision, the defensive line has become one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
