The Players Championship 2026 Preview: Wide Open at TPC Sawgrass & Johnny’s Winning Picks

The 2026 The Players Championship arrives this week at the iconic TPC Sawgrass, bringing together one of the deepest fields of the PGA Tour season. With 123 players teeing it up on the Stadium Course, the tournament often called “golf’s fifth major” feels unusually wide open this year.

Recent editions of the tournament were dominated by stars like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, but both enter the week with question marks. Scheffler, the current world No. 1, hasn’t looked quite as sharp lately. Early-round struggles and inconsistent ball striking have crept into his game, and he was spotted experimenting with multiple driver heads on the range this week while searching for answers. Despite the uncertainty, Scheffler is chasing history — a third Players title in four years.

McIlroy’s situation is even more uncertain. The defending champion is battling the same back issue that forced him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. As tournament week begins, his status remains unclear, leaving the door open for the next wave of contenders.

And that wave is arriving fast.

Young stars like Ludvig Åberg, Chris Gotterup, Akshay Bhatia and Jacob Bridgeman continue to inject fresh energy into the PGA Tour. Åberg, in particular, has the kind of elite ball-striking profile that typically thrives at Sawgrass.

Another serious contender is Collin Morikawa. Morikawa already claimed a major early-season win at Pebble Beach and could replicate McIlroy’s 2025 path by pairing that victory with a Players Championship title before the major season begins.

Veterans are also lurking. Past major champions like Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Justin Rose are searching for momentum heading into the spring majors, while players such as Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland and Russell Henley are quietly trending upward.

With uncertainty surrounding the favorites and a surge of young talent arriving, this year’s Players Championship could deliver one of the most unpredictable finishes in recent memory.
