On Thursday, the Texas Longhorns will face the Virginia Cavaliers in an elimination game at the College World Series.
Virginia had an early 4-0 lead against Mississippi State on Tuesday evening, but the Bulldogs rallied with a six-run eighth inning that the Cavaliers weren’t able to recover from.
After dropping their opening game to Mississippi State, Texas was able to defeat Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon 8-4 behind a stellar performance from relief pitcher Tanner Witt.
Texas head coach David Pierce has not committed to a starter on Thursday, but left-handed pitcher Pete Hansen remains the favorite to start on the mound. Hansen threw 26 pitches in two innings on Sunday against Mississippi State.
The Cavaliers are expected to start left-hander Mike Vasil against the Longhorns. Vasil has started 15 games this season with a 7-5 record and 4.82 ERA.
