Crystal Palace vs West Ham – LIVE!

A London derby under the lights at Selhurst Park is the late Premier League offering on New Year’s Day.

The Hammers make the short trip south having recovered some momentum in their top-four push following a damaging run with a 4-1 comeback victory at lowly Watford in midweek.

David Moyes’ side begin the year in fifth, but will drop down a place ahead of kick-off if rivals Tottenham win at Vicarage Road in their mid-afternoon kick-off.

Perched just outside the top half is a Crystal Palace side that have taken great strides under Patrick Vieira and recovered from a Covid-19 outbreak to put bottom club Norwich to the sword last time out.

However, with key stars such as Wilfried Zaha off to the Africa Cup of Nations this month, the Eagles will want to ensure they get more points on the board quickly and showcase the depth of an expanded squad that was built on during an impressive summer recruitment drive.

Vieira will be back in the home dugout today after missing the last two matches due to Covid isolation, but Zaha is surprisingly out as Declan Rice makes his 150th appearance for West Ham.

Half-time

Crystal Palace 0-3 West Ham

GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-3 West Ham | Manuel Lanzini 50′

18:22 , George Flood

50 mins: No mistake from Lanzini from the spot!

Guaita guesses the right way, but no chance he was keeping out a powerful effort into the bottom corner.

West Ham are on easy street. So foolish from Milivojevic.

PENALTY TO WEST HAM

18:21 , George Flood

49 mins: They were also checking a potential offside there, but there wasn’t one.

Referee England is sent to consult the pitch-side monitor and he gives the penalty!

So needless from Milivojevic.

18:20 , George Flood

47 mins: Milivojevic clearly handles the ball after Bowen knocks down the latest searching Johnson cross from the West Ham left.

VAR are going to check this for a potential penalty. It’s definitely handball, but was it inside the box?

18:19 , George Flood

45 mins: Into two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

Andersen slides in brilliantly inside the Palace box to halt Bowen in his tracks as the former Hull man hoped to tee up West Ham’s third goal on the break.

18:18 , George Flood

45 mins: Hughes declines to slide in Benteke and instead opts to shoot as Palace ramp up the pressure once more, but he pulls it well wide of the back post.

His wait for a first Eagles goal goes on.

18:17 , George Flood

43 mins: More Palace pressure leads to an impressive double intervention from Dawson, who defends well on the deck before beating Benteke to a header.

The home fans voice their frustration as Vieira’s side go backwards.

They feel there is a goal in this before the break.

18:15 , George Flood

41 mins: Palace chance!

That’s a difficult effort for Benteke, who manages to pull off a stinging half-volley from Ward’s cross that landed behind him.

Fabianski is equal to it.

18:13 , George Flood

39 mins: The game has become just a little bit scrappy as we tick towards half-time.

Antonio comes back from an offside position to get off a shot that is easily blocked.

Soucek gets back very well indeed to thwart Benteke inside the box after Edouard had got the better of midfield partner Rice.

Antonio/Benrahma connection

18:11 , George Flood

18:09 , George Flood

34 mins: It’s worth noting that Palace have had nine shots and 64 per cent of the possession in this first half so far, yet find themselves 2-0 down.

Clinical from the Hammers.

18:06 , George Flood

32 mins: It’s been a good response from Palace to that quick-fire double blow.

They hit the woodwork for the second time through Edouard, who smashes Ayew’s cut back against the underside of the crossbar.

Fabianski then gets down to deny Benteke, who also misses the target with a tough header from the resulting corner.

Watch: Lanzini scores brilliant West Ham second

Just as they did at Watford a few days ago, West Ham take control of the game in a matter of minutes.

What a goal that is from Lanzini, who has become a key figure in the squad once more after looking like he was heading out during the summer.

Terrific turnaround.

Those are the sort of runs Antonio wasn’t making during his barren run. He’s looked much sharper recently and benefits.

Benrahma deserves credit too, moved onto his right quickly and delivered a fine cross.

18:01 , George Flood

28 mins: Brief shouts for a Palace penalty as Johnson tussles with Benteke, but referee Darren England is not interested.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-2 West Ham | Manuel Lanzini 26′

17:59 , George Flood

26 mins: What a goal to double West Ham’s lead in very swift fashion!

Rice drives forward and tees up Lanzini, who looks to have taken too many touches before setting up a left-footed volley and rifling an unstoppable effort beyond Guaita.

A brilliant finish to dispatch an awkwardly bouncing ball.

West Ham now firmly in control of this London derby after two goals in three minutes.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham | Michail Antonio 23′

17:55 , George Flood

23 mins: West Ham break the deadlock midway through the first half!

Antonio gets the wrong side of Guehi and turns Benrahma’s super cross home from close range.

Guaita got a firm touch on it, but couldn’t keep it out.

Another inventive celebration follows!

17:55 , George Flood

21 mins: Palace force another couple of corners in quick succession, but West Ham hold firm with the second far too close to Fabianski, who felt he was impeded as he looked to launch a quick counter.

17:53 , George Flood

20 mins: That’s some leap from Benrahma to beat Mitchell to an inviting Antonio cross from the byline, but he can only steer his header wide of the back post.

17:52 , George Flood

18 mins: Diop is lucky not to have his name taken for a not-so-subtle foul on Schlupp.

Johnson then gets forward well again down the West Ham left, with his latest cross causing issues as Andersen has to get out of the way of a touch from Milivojevic.

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

17:48 , George Flood

That is much better from West Ham. Twice now Johnson has put in dangerous crosses from the left – no one was there attacking the ball for the first and the second brought about a fine chance for Antonio.

Some great goalkeeping from Guaita to keep it at 0-0.

17:47 , George Flood

14 mins: Brilliant goalkeeping from Vicente Guaita to keep this at 0-0.

He makes a superb close-range stop to thwart Antonio after Coufal’s cross from the byline, then reacts to scoop clear the loose ball before keeping out Benrahma’s header.

West Ham looking very lively now after a quiet opening.

17:45 , George Flood

12 mins: The first signs of attacking intent from West Ham, who have otherwise been notably subdued thus far.

Johnson combines nicely with Benrahma down the left flank and Bowen can’t quite connect with the cut back.

But the ball is kept alive and Coufal ends up lashing an effort well over the crossbar.

17:44 , George Flood

10 mins: Palace are full of confidence as another dangerous corner is diverted away by Soucek.

Vieira’s side come again, but a poor touch from Benteke brings their latest attack to a premature halt.

Crystal Palace have made a fantastic start here, with Schlupp very lively early on.

West Ham are struggling to get any sort of foothold at the moment and haven’t really strung too much together.

17:41 , George Flood

8 mins: Palace have been much the better side in the early exchanges, with Edouard a nuisance and Mitchell finding Schlupp at the back post.

Johnson is forced into a key block.

17:40 , George Flood

6 mins: Milivojevic tries to curl the ball deftly inside the near post, but it’s wide.

Did Fabianski have that covered? I’m not so sure.

17:39 , George Flood

5 mins: A good early tempo to this game and a strong atmosphere at Selhurst as Palace force a corner and a foul on Benteke then gives the hosts a free-kick in prime shooting range.

Milivojevic to step up…

Jack Rosser at Selhurst Park

17:36 , George Flood

What a let-off that is for West Ham. They’ve conceded early in their last two games and almost fell to the same fate there.

A tricky one for Schlupp but he has to be scoring that.

17:35 , George Flood

2 mins: WOODWORK!

What a chance for Palace to take an early lead.

Schlupp clatters an effort against the post after Hughes’ cross from the left was deflected by the head of Dawson and kept alive by the byline by Ayew.

A big let-off for the visitors. He should have buried that.

Kick-off

17:34 , George Flood

We are underway in SE25!

Palace in their familiar red and blue home kit, with West Ham wearing their change strips featuring sky blue and white stripes.

Jarred Gillett – who was the VAR for today’s controversial clash between Arsenal and Manchester City – has got there quickly from Stockley Park to fulfil fourth official duties.

17:31 , George Flood

The players are out on the pitch at Selhurst.

There will be a minute’s applause ahead of kick-off to remember those associated with Crystal Palace that passed away in 2021.

17:26 , George Flood

Here are the returning Patrick Vieira’s pre-match comments to Sky Sports when quizzed on today’s absences:

17:24 , George Flood

No confirmation has yet been forthcoming from Crystal Palace, but it is believed that the absences of Zaha and Kouyate today are Covid-related.

We’ll bring you the latest on that when we can.

Rice milestone

Tottenham jump above West Ham with Watford win

17:07 , George Flood

It’s all over at Vicarage Road, where Tottenham have beaten Watford 1-0 thanks to Davinson Sanchez’s last-gasp winner.

That result means Spurs jump back up to fifth, though West Ham can regain the place with victory this evening.

No Zaha or Gallagher for Crystal Palace

16:51 , George Flood

There is surprisingly no Wilfried Zaha in Crystal Palace’s match day squad despite the Eagles talisman having completed his one-match suspension following that red card at Tottenham.

Patrick Vieira makes two changes to the team that started against Norwich, with Cheikhou Kouyate – who misses out altogether – and Jean-Philippe Mateta replaced by captain Luka Milivojevic and Christian Benteke.

Michael Olise and Eberi Eze are on the bench, but there’s no involvement today for Nathan Ferguson.

Conor Gallagher also misses out as expected.

Rice for Noble in West Ham’s only change

16:46 , George Flood

As expected, Declan Rice does return to the West Ham midfield after suspension to make his 150th Premier League appearance.

Mark Noble drops to the bench in David Moyes’ only change from the 4-1 win at Watford in midweek.

Young defender Harrison Ashby exits the match day squad.

Moyes: No West Ham panic over Rice future

16:17 , George Flood

Interest in Rice has inevitably continued to build as his career goes from strength to strength, though, with a valuation of over £100m and a contract until 2024, Moyes insists West Ham are not worried about his future as things stand.

“Declan’s under a long contract here, under a long length of contract,” said Moyes. “So from that point of view we’ve not got a big panic on.

“We will keep Declan as long as we possibly can, we’ve no intention of selling him. If we ever had to, I’ve said already many, many times what it would be – a shoot to the moon.”

Moyes added: “Overall he’s done a great job. Hopefully he keeps driving the team on and I hope we continue to add good players to play with and around Declan.

“My job is to keep building the club and build this level up and I think getting Declan players around him who are of a similar level and capable of playing at a really high level.”

Declan Rice – the best midfielder in Europe?

16:09 , George Flood

David Moyes was full of praise for Declan Rice ahead of today’s all-London showdown, once again stating his case as the best midfielder in Europe.

“There’s not many better,” the West Ham boss said.

“I think if you break Declan down, you might say well okay, I want you to become even better in your passing. So you can look at Frenkie de Jong or you can look at Jorginho. You could look at people who are really, really tidy football players.

“But then if you looked at the other side of the game, Declan’s as good as anybody I know at recovering the ball, speed round the pitch. I can’t really off the top of my head think of many other midfield players like Declan in that mould really.

(POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

“Rodri’s slightly different in how he plays in a different fashion. But Declan’s a wee bit of all-round, and certainly can do different things and he’s beginning to add goals to his game.

“There’s probably not many better, but I think there are aspects of Declan’s game that he can improve – we want him to become better at so many things, but he’s been a revelation for us this season.”

Standard Sport prediction

15:53 , George Flood

West Ham finally found some form in front of goal last time out after a fairly barren run but Palace have been a tough nut to crack at home this season.

1-1 draw.

Vieira returns to dugout after isolation

15:46 , George Flood

Crystal Palace have confirmed that Patrick Vieira WILL be back in the home dugout this evening.

The Eagles boss has missed the last two matches against Tottenham and Norwich after testing positive for Covid-19, with assistant Osian Roberts taking the lead instead.

Crystal Palace team news – Zaha available after ban

15:44 , George Flood

Palace have Wilfried Zaha available again today after the Ivorian winger served his one-match suspension against Norwich, but he will soon be off to the Africa Cup of Nations along with the likes of Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Inspirational Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher remains doubtful due to illness, while James McArthur (thigh) is also still sidelined.

Centre-back Joachim Andersen is now available again, however.
