After a one-hour delay to start the game, followed by another hour-long delay, the game was called and the Yankees finally beat the Red Sox in 2021, 3-1, to improve to 1-7 through eight games against their rivals.

Five things to know from Friday’s game

1. The Yankees were perfect game’d for the first 3.2 innings of the contest and didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning, which was a double by Greg Allen. He was later knocked in on a single by DJ LeMahieu, which tied the game at one. For the series, it took New York 13.2 innings to score a run off Boston pitching.

2. Gerrit Cole (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K) had his second excellent start in a row. In his last 15 innings pitched, he’s struck out 23 and allowed only one run. Depending on one’s opinion of a complete game, he also had two of those in a row.

3. Tim Locastro made a great catch in the first inning but appeared to injure himself while doing so. After the game, Aaron Boone revealed Locastro has a torn ACL. Tyler Wade replaced him in the outfield and later made a great catch himself. (See highlight section.)

4. Before the bottom of the sixth inning, a fan in left field appeared to throw a baseball at Boston’s Alex Verdugo, which caused a delay. When play resumed Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres hit back-to-back home runs to put the Yankees up 3-1. It was Torres’ first home run in 30 games.

5. The two teams briefly took the field for the top of the seventh, but play was called at 10:49 p.m. At 11:45 p.m., the game was called for good.
