The Yankees lineup couldn’t generate much of anything against Tigers pitching, as Detroit came away with a 6-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
Here are some key takeaways…
– The Yankees got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Gleyber Torres walked to get things started, followed by a Gary Sanchez single and a Mike Ford walk to load the bases. Miguel Andujar then rolled into a double play, but it was enough to score Torres and take a one-run lead.
Andujar also made a nice sliding catch in left later in the game.
– Deivi Garcia pitched himself into a jam in the second inning, hitting Jonathan Schoop before allowing a Nomar Mazara single and walking Akil Baddoo to load the bases. Willi Castro then bounced a ball up the middle that Rougned Odor was able to field, but his throw across his body was well wide of first, allowing two runs to score.
The play was scored an infield single and an error on Odor, allowing Detroit to take a 2-1 lead.
– The Tigers added their third run of the game in the fourth, as Eric Haase tripled and came around to score on a Niko Goodrum sac fly. Later, in the fifth inning, Jeimer Candelario ripped an RBI double to right to make it a 4-1 game, and that ended Garcia’s day.
– Albert Abreu was the first out of the pen, and he immediately uncorked a wild pitch to move Candelario to third. He would come in to score on a Miguel Cabrera sac fly, making it a 5-1 game and closing out Garcia’s line.
Garcia went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. He threw 88 pitches, 52 of which were strikes.
Schoop then deposited a solo home run to left off Abreu to push Detroit’s lead to five runs. But Abreu was terrific in relief, going 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out three.
– Once again, the Yankees’ bats struggled mightily. The Bombers mustered just three hits (all singles) while stranding three runners in scoring position. They also struck out 12 times vs. Tigers pitching.

The Yankees and Tigers finish their series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m. Lefty Tarik Skubal goes for the Tigers, while the Yankees will return with Michael King.
