The Yankees bats go nearly silent and Andrew Heaney collapses in his debut, as the Baltimore Orioles pick up the series opening win, 7-1.
Here’s a few takeaways from the game:
1. In their first time through the order, the Yankees had no hits on the board. And yet they managed to strand four runners on the bases off a few walks and a HBP.
2. Heaney was having a solid Yankees debut through the first 2.2 innings of work on Monday, but back-to-back home runs gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead and put an early damper on his start.
3. The Orioles followed things up in the next inning with another two home runs off Heaney before he finished his day off.
He pitched 4.0 innings of six hit, four earned run (all homers) ball, while striking out four and walking none. Heaney became the first pitcher to allow four or more home runs in their Yankee debut. He picked up the loss on the day to fall to 6-8 on the season.
4. The Yanks no-hit woes continued into the fifth, but some more walks put runners on the bases. Anthony Rizzo fouled out to deep left with Gleyber Torres waiting on third and advancing on the fly ball to get the Yankees a run and cut the deficit to 4-1.
5. Baltimore tacked on two more runs in the sixth off Joely Rodriguez to extend the lead out to 6-1.
The Yankees put themselves in good position to score a few times through the rest of the game, starting with a leadoff double from Joey Gallo that broke up the no-hitter.
A runners on first and second with nobody out in the seventh wasn’t enough either, as the offense just continued to falter.
6. The Orioles added in another run before eventually taking the game 7-1.
The Yankees only put up three hits to the Orioles’ 11 in the loss.
