The Yankees announced that C Gary Sanchez is starting a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Sunday.

Sanchez, who landed on the IL Aug. 5 due to a back injury, will be getting “two or three” at-bats, according to manager Aaron Boone.

Boone added that there is a chance Sanchez could be available Tuesday for the doubleheader against the Red Sox.

Kyle Higashioka has been holding it down for Sanchez in the starting catcher role, with Rob Brantly serving as his backup.

Sanchez has been hitting .216 with 17 home runs and 39 RBI over 84 games so far this season.

Cole back in the rotation

Gerrit Cole will make his return to the rotation on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels. He’s been on the COVID-19 IL.
