In the last month, Breanna Stewart has earned a lot of titles: WNBA Commissioner’s Cup MVP, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, FIBA’s Olympics MVP.

Now, she can add mother to that list.

The Seattle Storm star and her fiancée, Marta Xargay Casademont, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Ruby, via a surrogate on Aug. 9. They announced the birth today on social media.

“Ruby’s arrival has been the best part of 2021 and easily one of the best moments of my life,” said Stewart. “Becoming a mom is bigger than anything else that I’ve done and I look forward to every beautiful and challenging moment as a family of three.”

Xargay, who is from Spain, is also a professional basketball player. She previously spent two seasons with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and most recently competed in her home country for Spar Girona and the Spanish women’s national team.

Xargay and Stewart announced their engagement in May and were married at a casual ceremony in July. They opened up about their relationship and growing their family in a YouTube documentary by Togethxr and Bleacher Report.

“Explaining the whole situation about how it’s a little different how we started it, using a surrogate, I think is one of the experiences that makes it kind of cool for people to see other sides more than just traditionally having a baby,” Stewart said in the documentary.

Stewart revealed in the documentary that she flew home from Tokyo on Aug. 8, the day after the Olympic gold medal game Aug. 7, in order to be present for Ruby’s birth. She then flew from Idaho where their surrogate was located to Phoenix in time for the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final on Aug. 12.

Stewart was critical to Team USA’s seventh consecutive gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics, averaging more than 30 minutes and 15 points per game. Just days after returning home from the Games, she led the Seattle Storm to victory in the first-ever WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final.

The WNBA returned Sunday from its Olympic break, and the Storm are facingfive straight away games that began with a loss to the Chicago Sky Sunday night. Stewart and Olympic teammate Sue Bird both sat out against the Sky, but it is likely that both will return for the Storm’s next game against the New York Liberty on Aug. 18.
