Aug. 21—KNOX — Winamac won its season opener with a 35-14 victory at Knox on Friday night.

Hayden Clark rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries for the Warriors. Russell Compton rushed for 88 yards and 2 TDs on 12 carries and was 4 of 9 passing for 65 yards. Caleb Good had a 28-yard reception, Clark had a 21-yard reception and Jaden Terry added a 16-yard reception.

Clark had TD runs of 34, 38 and 64 yards.

Winamac trailed 7-0 before taking a 21-14 lead at halftime. The Warriors scored 14 unanswered points in the second half.

Winamac rushed for 284 yards on 24 carries and passed for 65 yards. Knox rushed for 179 yards on 46 carries and passed for 92 yards on 2 of 3 attempts.

Knox fumbled five times and lost three of them and Winamac did not have a turnover. Good had two fumble recoveries and Remy Schwartz added the other.

Knox was Winamac coach John Hendryx’s previous stop before coming back home to his alma mater. Hendryx went 7-3 and won a sectional title last year in his first year back at WCHS. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame during All-Star weekend earlier this summer and plans to hold a ceremony next summer.

Winamac takes a 1-0 HNAC record into next week’s home game against Pioneer, which is 42-0 all-time in HNAC play.
