What McDaniels told Bourne before trick-play TD vs. Jets originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots‘ 54-13 rout of the New York Jets began with a bit of trickery.

Just over two minutes into the Week 7 showdown, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne put the Patriots on the board with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor. Pats quarterback Mac Jones took the snap and quickly tossed it to Bourne, who found a wide-open Agholor in the end zone.

Watch the play below:

The trick play set the tone for the rest of the game as the Jets simply had no answer for New England’s offense. Bourne finished with four catches for 68 yards to go along with his TD pass, and Jones notched the first 300-yard performance of his young NFL career while adding two TDs of his own.

Bourne spoke after the win about his key play and the work that went into perfecting it for Sunday.

“Through practice, I was definitely getting critiqued. Kind of threw it too high, floating at practice. Josh (McDaniels) kind of told me to put it on a rope,” Bourne said.

“Just practicing, man. Executing at practice and making it feel normal during the game. It’s just another practice play, so that’s definitely how it felt when I got the ball and we were able to make that play, a big play to start the game and start out on the right foot.”

Bourne is just the latest Patriots wideout to make an impact in the passing game. Fellow wideout Jakobi Meyers — a converted QB — threw for two TDs last season and has two completions for 45 yards this year. Former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman also had a knack for the trick-play TD pass during his career.

Perhaps we’ll see more Patriots trickery when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday.
