The Washington Football Team kicks off the 2021 preseason on Thursday against the New England Patriots. With the preseason here, that means we finally get an updated depth chart from the team.
It’s important to note; this depth chart does not come from the coaching staff, meaning it is unofficial. The depth chart comes from the team’s PR staff, so it does not necessarily reflect what head coach Ron Rivera or his staff think.
You’ll see more depth charts throughout the preseason that reflect the latest roster moves, but for now, let’s take a look at the WFT’s first unofficial depth chart of 2021.
Offense
Observations
-
Rookie Sam Cosmi is listed as the starter at right tackle. Veteran Cornelius Lucas is listed as the backup at left tackle. Lucas, who missed the first week after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, is competing to start with Cosmi at right tackle.
-
Saahdiq Charles is listed as the top backup at right guard and right tackle.
-
Wes Schweitzer remains No. 1 at left guard with Ereck Flowers behind him.
-
No surprise at wide receiver with Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries listed as starters.
-
Temarrick Hemingway is the No. 2 tight end behind Logan Thomas. Hemingway has had a strong camp.
-
Rookie John Bates is the co-No. 3 tight end, while Sammis Reyes is the co-No. 4 tight end.
-
Steven Sims Jr. is listed as the backup to Adam Humphries.
-
Jonathan Williams is the co-No. 3 at running back with Peyton Barber, ahead of both Jaret Patterson and Lamar Miller.
Defense
Observations
-
Rookie Jamin Davis is the starter at middle linebacker.
-
Jon Bostic joins Cole Holcomb atop the depth chart at outside linebacker.
-
Khaleke Hudson is listed as No. 2 at middle linebacker. Hudson is more of an outside linebacker so that one is a surprise.
-
Troy Apke is listed as No. 3 behind William Jackson III and Jimmy Moreland at one cornerback spot. Apke has had a strong camp after moving from safety.
-
Torry McTyer is No. 4 at the same cornerback position. McTyer continues to make plays.
-
Veteran Darryl Roberts is listed as No. 4 at the other cornerback spot behind Kendall Fuller, Benjamin St-Juste and co-No. 3s Greg Stroman and Danny Johnson.
-
Landon Collins is in the top spot at strong safety while Kamren Curl occupies the top spot at free safety. Bobby McCain is No. 2 behind Curl at free safety.
-
James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill are each No. 2 at defensive end. Both rookies, William Bradley-King and Shaka Toney, are each No. 3 on the depth chart.
Special Teams
Observations
-
Danny Johnson is listed as the top kick returner with Steven Sims Jr. at No. 2
-
DeAndre Carter is listed as the No. 1 player at punt returner, with Sims Jr. behind him.
-
The preseason will be a big test for each player vying to be Washington’s punt returner.
