Washington adds Ricky Seals-Jones to TE mix on roster originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Washington Football Team has added another tight end to the fold, signing Ricky Seals-Jones to the roster following the first day of OTAs.
For Washington, Seals-Jones acts as another potential option as the team searches for depth and a clear No. 2 and No. 3 at the position going into the 2021 season.
Logan Thomas is the No. 1, but beyond that there are no other guarantees. Fourth-round 2021 pick John Bates will have a chance to carve out a spot given that the team invested a mid-round selection on him and head coach Ron Rivera is impressed with what he can bring to the table.
Sammis Reyes is another intriguing option given his athleticism and incredible journey to an NFL roster, but with no prior experience playing football, he’s also a major wildcard. Temarrick Hemmingway, Deon Yelder and Tyrone Swoopes will also compete in the coming months
That could open a path for Seals-Jones to find his way onto the roster by Week 1. The fifth-year pro has found some production since entering the league undrafted in 2017. In 2018 with the Arizona Cardinals he caught 34 passes for 343 yards and a touchdown. He then caught four touchdowns in 14 games with the Browns in 2019. He appeared in just two games with the Chiefs last season and registered no stats in the passing game.
Still, with a 6-foot-5 frame and 4.69 speed, Seals-Jones could provide a mismatch if lined up on a linebacker while providing depth behind Thomas.
If nothing else, he’s another option for Rivera and company to evaluate over the summer as the team continues to search for multiple productive players at the position.
