The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts will host the 122nd U.S. Open, which starts Thursday and concludes Sunday. This will be the fourth time the major is hosted at one of the oldest golf courses in the U.S.

The U.S. Open field is composed of 156 players, including those atop the Official World Golf Ranking and other recent major winners and top-10 finishers. Tiger Woods will not play in the U.S. Open, saying his “body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf.”

Jon Rahm won the tournament last year at Torrey Pines in San Diego, becoming the first U.S. Open champion from Spain. The reigning champion will try to be the eighth golfer ever to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles, which was last done in 2017 and 2018 by Brooks Koepka. The betting favorite to win in Brookline is Rory McIlroy, who won in 2011.

Phil Mickelson, other LIV golfers playing in the U.S. Open

Much of the talk entering the tournament surrounds the entrance of Phil Mickelson, who, along with several other PGA Tour golfers, is coming off the heels of playing at the contentious Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series.

“As a golfer, I have the utmost respect for Phil,” McIlroy said Tuesday during U.S. Open media availability. “I’ve been disappointed with how he’s went about what he’s done. But I think he has come back and shown some remorse about how he’s handled some things, so I think he’s learned from that.

“Am I disappointed in him taking the route that he’s taken? I am. But I still respect him tremendously.”

The players who participated in the LIV were suspended for an undisclosed amount of time by the PGA Tour but have no jurisdiction over the U.S. Open.

These are the golfers from the LIV in the field this week besides Mickelson: 2016 champion Dustin Johnson, 2020 champion Bryson, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, James Piot, Sam Horsfield, Shaun Norris, Richard Bland and Talor Gooch,
