US Open 2021: Qualifying, When is the draw, when does it start and how to watch on TV in the UK – SHUTTERSTOCK

Novak Djokovic arrives at the US Open with history beckoning as he aims to win a record 21st Grand Slam title and surpass his great rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the all-time standings.

Victory for the world No 1 would also mean he becomes the first man to win all four grand slam titles in a calendar year since 1969.

The biggest challenge to Djokovic’s quest is likely to come from Alexander Zverev, who is in the form of his life having won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and the recent Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.

Ashleigh Barty is the favourite to win the women’s title and claim her third major when the tournament gets underway. Naomi Osaka is the defending champion but is low on confidence and short of match wins since victory at the Australian Open in January. While teen star Coco Gauff will also be hoping for a deep run in New York.

Great Britain’s Francesca Jones and Samantha Murray have moved a step closer to the main draw of the US Open after winning their opening qualifying matches.

Jones, world number 170, defeated American Elizabeth Mandlik 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 while Murray saw off Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Both will have to win two more games to take one of the qualifying spots, with Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage set to start their campaign on Wednesday.

In the men’s qualifying, Liam Broady will take on Tatsuma Ito in his first qualifying round on Wednesday.

Who will be missing at the US Open?

On the men’s side, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and defending champion Dominic Thiem are all missing the event due to injury. Former British No 1 Kyle Edmund and 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka are also absent.

In contrast, the women’s draw had managed to avoid any major withdrawals until Serena Williams, who was last seen leaving Centre Court in tears after hurting her leg at Wimbledon, pulled out with a torn hamstring.

Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens is out due to a left ankle injury and there are also injury doubts over the likes of Johanna Konta and Simona Halep.
