“Stop all the clocks. Stone all the crows. Do not rub your eyes. America have won the basketball. They take the men’s gold medal with an 87-82 win against France.
“France were game and reduced the lead to a mere three points on a couple of occasions in the final quarter but every time they came close to taking a lead Team USA found a different gear.
“It’s been a harder tournament than many expected for them, with their opening defeat to France a huge shock. They were sloppy to the end here, turning the ball over needlessly with mere seconds remaining when they could have held onto possession to see out the game. Two made free throws put the French within one score again with 10 seconds to go. They intentionally fouled to stop the clock seconds later and Kevin Durant made two free throws of his own to finish the scoring.
“An appropriately low-key conclusion to the men’s tournament: its best player settling it, without any of the flair or dominance we expect from an American basketball team.”

Severe storm warning temporarily suspends play in the final round of the women’s golf
What timing! The horn goes off at the Kasumigaseki Country Club and all players return to the clubhouse.
Hopefully the storm will move through quickly; we’ve got just two more holes to finish off for the final group, but it’s wide open. We’re expecting a decision on when play will resume in about half an hour.

“It will not shock you to learn that Team USA have the lead at the half-time print of the men’s basketball final.
“It’s not been a procession, France have looked capable when moving the ball at speed, and strong in the paint. But they don’t have an answer for Kevin Durant, like every other team here.
“Whenever America have looked in mild peril he has been the go-to guy and leads his team with 21 points at the half. It’s 44-39, so not done and dusted yet, but equally it seems possible that USA will not squander this lead at any point from hereon in.”

Korda’s lead has been cut to one stroke (-17 overall). She’s got Inami (Japan) and Ko (New Zealand) right behind her, with Ashok (India) just one more stroke back.

“Here we go in the men’s basketball gold medal game in the Saitama Super Arena, which has comfortably the busiest press section I’ve seen anywhere at these Games, and a growing smattering of volunteers taking up the empty seats. More power to them! It’s been a long two weeks of politely explaining to foreigners where the toilets are.
“It’s the USA vs France this morning. Gee, wonder who the favourites are? Still, France beat America in the first group stage game here and it’s a big dunk from Utah Jazz centre Rudy Golbert, of France, to open the scoring. They’ll need to stop the evergreen Kevin Durant, who has been predictably fantastic in this tournament for the USA.”

The final round has begun an hour earlier today to try to get all golfers through before an incoming storm. Nelly Korda (US) leads on -15, followed by Aditi Ashok (India) on -12. There are a group of four golfers on -10, including Japan’s Mone Inami.
Those in contention are teeing off in the next 20 minutes.

With 11km to go, Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir and the US’s Molly Seidel jostle for the lead at front of a forward pack of around 10 runners. They are 1:50:00 through, so expect around another 40 minutes in the race.

Sports nutritionist under investigation
The sport nutritionist who has claimed credit for helping to guide Italian sprinter Lamont Jacobs to Olympic glory is reportedly at the centre of a police investigation into the illegal distribution of anabolic steroids.
Jacobs shocked the athletics world when he raced to victory in the blue-riband 100 metres race in Tokyo on Sunday in a European record time of 9.80 secs. He added to his medal haul on Friday when he helped the Italian team to gold in the 4×100 metres sprint relay final.
Giacomo Spazzini, a professional bodybuilder who runs a fitness training and sports nutrition business, basked in Jacobs’ reflected glory immediately after his Tokyo triumph.
According to The Times, Spazzini posted a video last year in which he outlined how he was going to help the athlete break the 10-second barrier for the 100 metres.
The newspaper says that it has seen police documents which show a link between Spazzini and a probe by authorities in Milan called ‘Operation Muscle Bound’ into allegations of fraud, the use or supply of drugs to alter athletic performance and the handling of stolen goods.
Jacobs’ agent this week said that his client had parted company with Spazzini after discovering that the investigation had been launched. Marcello Magnani told The Times: “The investigation has never touched Marcell and, therefore,we have no information about it.” He added that any question of Jacobs using illicit substances was “insane.”
There is no suggestion Jacobs has acted improperly. Spazzini could not be contacted on Friday night for comment.

And welcome to our rolling, live coverage from Day 15 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The day’s action has kicked off already with the women’s marathon, which began at 10pm BST. The race – as well as the walking events and the men’s marathon – was moved first to the city of Sapporo to escape the worst of Tokyo’s summer heat and humidity and also moved earlier in the day to have it in cooler conditions.
Some of the competitors in the Olympic marathon field have already had a blast of furnace-type heat and humidity at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. That race was a midnight run and still hit 88 degrees (31 C), with a heat index was 105 (40 C). It led to nearly 30 runners not getting to the finish line as Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya captured gold.
She’s among the favorites at the Tokyo Olympics. There could be quite a few DNFs given the conditions. There are three Britons taking part: Jess Piasecki, Stephanie Twell and Stephanie Davis.
Elsewhere in the day we’ll be covering the following events in detail, with medal hopes for Great Britain, who currently sit fourth in the medal table.
Coming up in the next couple of hours we’ll have updates from the women’s golf, the men’s basketball final and Tom Daley, who takes part in the 10m individual platform semi-final at 2am and, if he gets through, the final.
