May 21—BROOKINGS — The Mitchell High School girls golf team captured another team title on Thursday.

The Kernels shaved off 11 strokes from their previous tournament and claimed the Brookings Invitational at the Brookings Country Club. Mitchell carded a 329, while Harrisburg (341) and Aberdeen Central (343) finished second and third, respectively.

“The girls played good enough for the most part,” Mitchell assistant coach Jeff Meyerinnk said. “I know some of the girls weren’t happy with the way they finished here or there, but you can’t have every tournament be your best round and you just have to move on from a bad one and get ready for the next.”

Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa shot a two-under-par 70 to earn individual medalist honors. Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink carded a three-over-par 75 to finish in second place.

Meyerink shot a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine. Meyerink’s front nine was highlighted by an eagle and two straight birdies.

“It was a lot of firsts for her,” coach Meyerink said. “First eagle. First back-to-back birdies. It was just a fun day for her out there.”

Masy Mock tied for fourth place with an 80. She shot a 39 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine.

“Masy came in with a solid 80,” coach Meyerink said. “As always you talk about the strokes left out there and not the ones that you saved, but overall we pulled it off for the win.”

Quinn Dannenbring tied for 10th place with an 85 to give Mitchell three golfers in the top 15. Ella Flippin (89), Maddie Childs (94) and Lara Widstrom (97) rounded out the Kernel golfers.

Up next, the Kernels will play in the Watertown Invitational on Monday. The meet has been moved from Cattail Crossing Golf Course to Prairie Winds Golf Club.

“That course has two different layouts,” coach Meyerink said. “One is a tighter, matured treeline and the other is more like a prairie look. It’s kind of wide open with bunkers and hazards. It’s just a really cool back nine. So it will be a different style of play than what they are used to, but I think that’s good. It will be good to mix it up a little bit and see how they can do.”
