Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is Texas born and raised, but those roots don’t extend to Dallas Cowboys fandom.

Murray didn’t hold back when explaining why he wasn’t a fan.

“They were always ass,” Murray told reporters at a Sports Illustrated release of his magazine cover (h/t Blogging the Boys).

Murray said he was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings as a kid.

Cowboys during Kyler Murray’s lifetime

Murray was born during the 1997 training camp and attended Allen High School. He went to Texas A&M for a year before transferring to Oklahoma.

In the seasons beginning in 1997, the Cowboys had 11 seasons at more than .500. But it hasn’t been my much in most cases. They reached the playoffs in 1998 and 99, losing in the wild card round both times and doing it again in 2003 and 2006. They lost in the divisional round every other time they reached, totaling five seasons but never back-to-back. The Cowboys have never made it to the NFC Championship game in Murray’s 23 years of life.

In his formative team-picking years of around 2000-2007 (when he was the ages of 3 to 10) the Cowboys were particularly bad with finishes near the bottom of the division every time out.

During that same approximate stretch, the Vikings lost in the NFC conference title game in 2000 and finished second in the division most of the early 2000s. They finished atop the division and went to the playoffs in back-to-back years in 2008-09, losing the conference title game in 2009.

Murray era: Cardinals vs. Cowboys

The Cardinals play the Cowboys in Week 17 of the season. The Cardinals are 5-1 against the Cowboys in the past six games, including the Murray led win last fall. Arizona won, 38-10.

Dallas does lead the overall series, 56-33-1.

Murray and Co. are hoping to take the Cardinals back to the NFC Championship, which they’ve done twice during Murray’s lifetime. They lost the 2008 Super Bowl to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cardinals are at +4000 odds to win the 2022 Super Bowl via BetMGM. The Cowboys are +3000. It’s the Chiefs with the best odds at +450.
