Sophia Smith’s stunning strike leads Portland Thorns FC over Orlando Pride originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

While she missed out on the U.S. women’s national team this summer in Tokyo, Sophia Smith showed why it’s a matter of when, not if, she’ll represent the USA on the world’s largest stage.

During the 26th minute, Smith began a run beyond midfield which concluded with her booming a shot into the close upper corner from outside the eighteen.

Take a look.

That’s why Portland selected the Stanford alumnus first overall during the 2020 NWSL College Draft.

The stunning soccer display was the highlight of a comfortable 2-1 win over Orlando Pride (4-3-4) for Thorns FC (6-3-1), as Portland moves into first place atop the NWSL Standings with 19 points.

Not done yet, Portland got a two-goal advatnage in the 58th minute off a Marissa Everett header into the same, top-right corner.

Orlando would score in the 95th minute to make the final score, 2-1.

Next, Portland travels to Houston to play the Dash on July 24th at 5:30 p.m. PST on Paramount Plus.
