Serena Williams was eliminated from the French Open in the fourth round by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina on Sunday.
Rybakina, a 21-year-old ranked No. 22, prevailed 6-3, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
Williams was eliminated before the quarterfinals of the French Open for a fourth consecutive year after returning from life-threatening childbirth.
It’s the 12th Grand Slam overall that she’s played since having daughter Olympia, with four runners-up but no titles.
Williams, 39, remains on 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the Open Era record but one shy of Margaret Court‘s all-time record. Court won several of her titles in tournaments that did not include the world’s best players.
