With two lottery picks entering the NBA draft, the Golden State Warriors have been linked to quite a few prospects with the seventh and 14th overall selections.
Baylor Bears guard Davion Mitchell is among those prospects that have been projected to be selected by the Warriors. He is thought to be one of the most NBA-ready players this year with his ability to defend and space the floor, and he could be a good fit with the Warriors.
However, the Warriors may not be necessarily sold on his game and ability.
According to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Warriors are apparently split on taking Mitchell. Some within the organization believe he can step in and play now while others don’t believe he should be taken in the top 10.
But according to league sources, Golden State’s front office is split on Mitchell. Some scouts and executives view him as a ready-made contributor with a chance to become a franchise cornerstone. Others figure Mitchell, who turns 23 on Sept. 5, doesn’t have enough upside to warrant a top-10 selection.
Mitchell, who worked out with the Warriors on Thursday, was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 14.1 points, 5.5 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals. He was the first player in program history to be named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
His ability to defend at a high level, and shoot from 3-point range makes him perhaps one of the top 3-and-D options this year. Given those two skillsets, Mitchell could be an option for the Warriors, who could use another defensive stopper on that end of the floor.
The Warriors have also said to be interested in trading both the seventh and 14th picks to acquire players that can help them win now. They are even reportedly willing to include first-year center James Wiseman in potential trade conversations.
Golden State will certainly be among the teams to watch on draft night to see what sort of moves they have planned. The draft figures to get very interesting once they are on the clock on July 29.
