Former Washington Football Team running back Derrius Guice was suspended for six games following his 2020 domestic violence arrest, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Guice, 24, was arrested last August on three charges of assault and battery, one count of destruction of property and one felony count of strangulation. Guice was accused of strangling his girlfriend until she was unconscious. Guice’s girlfriend also accused Guice of two other instances of domestic violence after Guice was arrested.

The Washington Football Team cut Guice shortly after the arrest.

The felony charge against Guice was dropped early in 2021. In June, the domestic violence charges against Guice were dropped after he reached a settlement with his accuser.

With the charges dropped, the NFL concluded its investigation into Guice and issued his suspension.

In addition to his domestic violence arrest, Guice was accused of raping two women while at LSU. The university has scrubbed Guice’s name from its record books as a result of the accusations.

Derrius Guice faces uncertain future in NFL

It’s unclear whether Guice will try to continue his career in the NFL. Guice was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played five games as a rookie, rushing for 245 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He was released by the team before the start of the 2020 NFL season and was not picked by any club.

While the accusations against Guice were horrendous, NFL teams have shown a willingness to prioritize talent over character. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Antonio Brown despite an accusation of rape, and the Cleveland Browns gave Kareem Hunt a contract after he was caught on video kicking a woman in the face.
