Piers Morgan has warned people not to underestimate the effects of long COVID as Lewis Hamilton had to seek medical help after a Formula One race at the weekend.

Former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan is still recovering from catching COVID himself at the Euros final at Wembley and said he could relate to what Formula One driver Hamilton was experiencing.

Hamilton had to be helped onto the podium as he appeared to be struggling after finishing third in Sunday’s race at the Hungaroring track in Hungary and was late for the press conference as he had to visit his team’s doctor.

Morgan, 56, tweeted: “Do not underestimate the effects of long-covid. I’ve never had fatigue like this, nearly 3 weeks after symptoms started.

“Lewis, one of the world’s fittest athletes, had covid 8 months ago and is still having issues he believes are linked to it.”

Hamilton, 36, caught COVID in Dubai in December, but spoke at Sunday’s press conference about how he believes the after effects of the virus are still troubling him.

The racing driver said: “I haven’t spoken to anyone particularly about long COVID, but I think it is lingering there.

“I was having real dizziness and everything got a bit blurry on the podium. I have been fighting with staying healthy following what happened at the end of last year, but still it’s a battle.

“I remember the effects of when I had COVID, and training has been different ever since then. The level of fatigue that you get is different and it’s a real challenge.”

Recently, Morgan has angered sports stars, commentators and fans by criticising the Tokyo Olympics.

His complaints have included a lack of atmosphere with dramatically cut down numbers of spectators allowed in to watch events, claiming that any medal other than Gold is not worth celebrating, and criticising US gymnast Simone Biles for dropping out due to mental health struggles.

BBC sports pundits Gary Lineker and Gabby Logan have argued with him over his views on Twitter, where he has controversially claimed that athletes should not feel proud of displaying their Silver and Bronze medals.
