The 2021 season for Will Redmond with the Green Bay Packers is over.
The team placed Redmond on season-ending injured reserve as part of the roster cutdown to 80 players on Tuesday.
Players placed on injured reserve before the selection of the initial 53-man roster are not eligible to come off injured reserve. The Packers could come to an injury settlement with Redmond, which would release him from the team at a later point.
Redmond, who signed a one-year deal to return to Green Bay this offseason, left Saturday’s preseason loss to the New York Jets with a toe injury. He had missed the majority of training camp after beginning the summer on the non-football list.
The competition for roster spots at safety behind Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage can really heat up. Redmond was the favorite to be the No. 3 safety. Now, Vernon Scott, Henry Black, Innis Gaines and Christian Uphoff all have a terrific opportunity to not only lock down a roster spot, but also secure an important role on defense and special teams.
Redmond played in 13 games for the Packers last season. Matt LaFleur described him as one of the Packers’ best special teams players.
