Nuno Espirito Santo – PA

Crystal Palace have been unable to reach agreement with Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, and will now look elsewhere to find a successor to Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport on Tuesday, the Portuguese was in detailed negotiations to take over at Palace, but the two parties were eventually unable to reach an accord. There is a significant backroom staff who come with Nuno and the budget for their contracts proved a sticking point between the two sides.

There remains interest in Nuno, 47, from Everton, although the Merseyside club have also made informal inquiries on a wide range of managers including Graham Potter at Brighton and Hove Albion and the out-of-work Antonio Conte. They are yet to make a decision on Nuno’s future and it is possible that he could still be the next manager at Goodison Park. There has also been interest in Nuno from Lazio in Serie A.

For Palace, there has been interest in Frank Lampard, most recently at Chelsea, and also the current Swansea City manager Steve Cooper. The Barnsley manager Valerien Ismael, a former Palace player, is another candidate who is under consideration.

Palace are in transition this summer with the option to re-sign a number of players who are out of contract, including Andros Townsend, Gary Cahill, Joel Ward and Scott Dann. Christian Benteke has already agreed a new deal. Eberechi Eze has a long-term Achilles injury and is out until the new year.

Palace are hopeful of an appointment soon to allow their new manager to plan with the club’s sporting director Dougie Freedman for the next season. The club are prepared to invest in new players and loan signings to strengthen the squad as well as renewing deals of some of those out of contract.
