Jul. 16—ROCHESTER — It was a night of rallies for the Willmar Stingers.
RBI singles by Grant Kerry and Daniel Walsh in the top of the 10th inning lifted Willmar to a 5-3 Northwoods League victory over the Rochester Honkers on Thursday night.
It was the third rally of the night for the Stingers, who trailed 1-0 and 3-2 before coming up with runs.
The Stingers scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. They added a run in the eighth to tie it at 3-3 before their big 10th inning.
The game was played before 617 fans at Mayo Field.
Carter Howell led the Stingers by going 3-for-5 with a run, a double and two RBI. The center fielder and lead-off hitter is from Moorhead and Augustana University. He has his batting average up to .291 (48 of 165) with 35 runs, six doubles, two triples, five home runs and 27 RBI.
Kerry went 2-for-5 with two runs, including a solo home run. The first baseman from Northwest Nazarene University of Idaho by way of Wynyard, England, is hitting .333 (24 of 72) this season with four doubles, two homers and 19 RBI.
Walsh wound up 2-for-5 with the key RBI. He’s a third baseman from Western Carolina University now batting .255 (27 of 106) with 14 RBI.
Willmar (5-6 second half, 21-26 overall) and Rochester (4-6, 19-23) play again at 6:35 p.m. Friday at Mayo Field.
