The performances of the first-round rookie quarterbacks, including Chicago‘s Caleb Williams, Washington’s Jayden Daniels, New England‘s Drake Maye, Minnesota‘s J.J. McCarthy, Atlanta‘s Michael Penix Jr., and Denver‘s Bo Nix will be watched closely.

In terms of contract situations to monitor, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk all could be in line for new deals these next few weeks — or lingering drama if they don’t get them.

As always, there are buzzy QB competitions in store as well, highlighted by Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields in Pittsburgh. Another to keep an eye on is Gardner Minshew vs. Aidan O’Connell in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Maye, Nix, McCarthy and Penix will all try to push presumed starters as much as possible in their camps, and here’s a wild card: Daniel Jones vs. Drew Lock with the Giants.

  • Interesting moment from Dak Prescott

Speaking to the media after practice, Prescott grinned and stopped, then said:

“I’m gonna say it. I want to be here, but when you look [it] up, all the other great quarterbacks that I watched played for other teams [than their first team]. … That’s not something to fear.”

  • Ja’Marr Chase not practicing with Bengals for second straight day

Chase, one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, wants a new contract, likely in line with Justin Jefferson’s record-setting deal earlier this summer.

The fourth-year Pro Bowler is set to make $1 million in base salary this season and $4.86 million overall. Bengals team owner Mike Brown said the team will “try hard” to extend Chase earlier this week, though his comments have only cast more cloudiness on the situation.

Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones: Both wideout CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons believe they’re worthy of being the highest paid non-QB in the NFL.

  • Why are Packers ready to reward Jordan Love after relatively brief period as starting QB?

“We feel very, very confident that the success he had last year was no mistake,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday during practice. “He’s still got a lot of growth. There’s a lot in front of him, and that’s why we need him out here as soon as we can get him because there’s a lot of important things he needs to go through to get ready for this season.

“But I do think having that history with him gives us a lot of confidence where he’s going.”

It’s tough to trace the degree to which Green Bay’s patience has bred success versus its success fostering a culture of patience.

But Aaron Rodgers sat for three years before he collected four MVP awards and a Super Bowl victory with the Packers. After Love sat for three years, he passed for the seventh-most yards (4,159) and second-most touchdowns (32) last season. No first-year starter fared better last year.

“A lot of quarterbacks get ruined in this league because they play well before they’re ready,” head coach Matt LaFleur said.
