Projecting picks for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 is going to be a little bit more of a challenging exercise than it has been over the course of the past few seasons. Dolphins fans have thrived during draft season courtesy of the team’s embarrassment of assets at their disposal — Miami has picked five times in the first round over the last two offseasons and made another four selections in the second-round of 2020 and 2021 combined.
Nine players, which make up 17% of the Dolphins’ 2021 active roster, were picked by the team in the last 16 months within their respective top-64 selections.
These are exciting times.
But 2022 brings a new set of projections: and Miami is currently scheduled to pick just once in each of the first two rounds this time around — leaving less names to tie to Miami in the process. That is, of course, subject to change (here’s looking at you, Xavien Howard). But as things currently stand? The mock drafts will be lighter on Miami Dolphins selections for the next year.
Luke Easterling of Draft Wire has put on his ‘GM hat’ and tried to make some forecasts and find fits for each of the league’s 32 teams for next spring. His first choice is likely to appeal to Dolphins fans who walked away from this past year’s draft disheartened by the lack of a new running back in the first few rounds. Easterling has mocked the Dolphins Texas A&M running back Isaiah Spiller in the first round courtesy of the team’s pick from San Francisco (No. 28 overall) before pairing the team with South Carolina pass rusher Kingsley Enagbare in the 2nd-round.
Spiller is a productive player who would fit the physical style Miami appears to covet as a runner, but his production on third downs and in the passing game are currently limited — Spiller can land in the first and could be a fit for Miami, but he’d likely need to showcase upgraded skills there to be an appeal in the first round.
