National signing day: Georgia, Texas A&M take early lead as college recruits make commitments official; Jackson State pulls off stunner

One of the biggest days on the college football calendar is here as National Signing Day kicked off Wednesday.

A majority of college recruits use this day to sign their letters of intent.

It will be the usual suspects vying to score the top ranking on recruiting sites, with SEC stalwarts Alabama and Georgia leading the way, with Texas A&M strong after receiving verbal commits from several five-star prospects.

This is the fifth year of the early signing period, which was usually held in February. But this trend might be on its last legs, as it has contributed to upheaval with schools scrambling to keep recruits amid a rash of coaches being dismissed or taking different jobs before the signing period.

Texas A&M

The Aggies got a commitment from tight end Jake Johnson, the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson. Johnson is the nation’s No. 1 tight end recruit and had decommited from LSU amid the coaching change from Ed Orgeron to Brian Kelly.

Jackson State

Jackson State pulled off an absolute stunner flipping cornerback Travis Hunter from Florida State. Hunter becomes the highest ranked recruit to sign with Deion Sanders and the Tigers in what could be a game-changer for the program. Hunter, from Suwanee, Georgia had been verbally committed to Florida State for the last 18 months.

Texas

Former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers officially committed to Texas. Ewers was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the class of 2021. Terrance Brooks, a four-star cornerback and a Ohio State commit since June, officially flipped to the Longhorns.

Clemson

The Tigers continue to stack quarterback talent receiving a committment from Cabe Klubnik, Klubnik is a four-star recruit from Westlake in Austin, Texas.

Alabama

Alabama scored another game-changer on offense with running back Emmanuel Henderson. Henderson is on many recruiting lists as the top high school back in the nation.

Tennessee

Tyre West, a four-star defensive tackle from Tifton, Georgia, had been verbally committed to the Georgia Bulldogs since last year, but the Volunteers swooped in and scored the flip, besting their SEC East rival and Florida State.

Georgia

The Bulldogs are cleaning up so far after signed top 100 recruits Malaki Starks, cornerbacks Jaheim Singletary and Daylen Everette, running back Branson Robinson, linebacker Jalon Walker and defensive tackles Bear Alexander and Mykel Williams.
