Jul. 10—The Miesvsille Mudhens are not the kind of team you can supply with extra outs.
The Mudhens took advantage of some costly errors by the Rochester Royals to post a 10-5 victory in Section 1B amateur baseball on Friday night at Mayo Field.
Left-hander Matt Meyer pitched six solid innings for the Royals and they held a 2-1 lead. But the Royals had three infield errors in the top of the seventh as Miesville scored four unearned runs to take a 5-2 lead.
“I was scratching and clawing to get outs and it worked for the first six (innings),” Meyer said. “After the sixth it kind of got out of hand for us. But we were right there the whole game, it just got away from us at the end.”
Meyer nearly escaped the seventh with a 2-1 lead. Miesville had two runners on with two outs. Shortstop Matthew Hayford then fielded a slow hopper but his throw to first was wide and the tying run scored. Quinn Kruger followed with a two-run single to put the Mudhens ahead and a fourth run of the inning scored on another error.
The 36-year-old Meyer left after the seventh inning. The Mudhens then scored four runs in the eighth and another in the ninth. Nate Hammes hit a two-run homer in the eighth and the Mudhens finished with 15 hits.
“It’s tough,” Meyer said. “Their lineup is one of the best if not the best in the state, even with a short lineup. Their top five, six hitters are some of the toughest outs you’ll see all season. And their pitchers that were hitting in the lineup were putting good swings on balls. It makes it tough on pitchers.”
“It’s one of those games that got away from us late in the game,” Royals player/manager Tim Oesterlin said. “We kind of let them hang around and we kind of fell apart at the end.”
The Royals scored two runs right away as Sam Warren and Hayford touched Matt Moore for RBI singles in the bottom of the first. But Moore recovered from the shaky start and allowed just two more hits. He did walk six batters, however, and left after loading the bases with no outs in the eighth with the Royals down 9-2.
Warren and Hayford drove in runs in a two-run eighth for the Royals and Alex Holets closed the scoring with a solo homer to right in the ninth.
“We scored two right away and then we didn’t score until late,” Oesterlin said. “And they’re a good team. They kept the pressure on and had a lot of hits and had the timely hitting that we didn’t have.”
The loss snapped the Royals’ three-game winning streak. Are are now 13-9 overall and 10-3 in their last 13 games. Miesville is 6-1 in Section 1B play and the Royals are 3-4.
“We’ll bounce back and be all right,” Oesterlin said.
The Royals will host the Elko Express at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mayo Field in a Section 1B game. Lefty Matteo Finocchi is expected to start on the mound for the Royals.
