Call it the Francisco Lindor game, as the Mets defeated the Yankees, 7-6, in a classic on Sunday night behind his three home runs.
Here’s a few takeaways from the game:
1. The Mets found themselves in a 2-0 hole after the top of the first, with the Yankees taking advantage of back to back walks from Carlos Carrasco to start the game. RBI connections from Giancarlo Stanton and Joey Gallo brought in the runs.
Jonathan Villar helped cut the lead in half in the next frame, taking his leadoff walk and turning it into a run after advancing to second on a groundout and then coming home on Michael Conforto‘s infield single
2. Francisco Lindor ripped a three-run home run — his 15th of the year — in the bottom of the second to give the Mets the 4-2 lead.
3. The Mets extended their lead to 5-2 after loading up the bases on Clarke Schmidt with just one out. A sac fly by James McCann brought Javier Baez in from third to score, but that’s all the damage they could do in the inning.
4. Carrasco’s day was done after 5.0 innings of three hits, two earned run ball to go with five strikeouts and four walks.
5. The Yankees cut the lead down to 5-4 on a Gleyber Torres two-run shot out to left, but Lindor responded in the following frame, knocking his second bomb out of the ball park to bring it back up to a two-run game at 6-4.
Lindor became the 11th Met ever to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game.
6. Stanton answered Lindor’s homer with one of his own, a two-run shot out to deep center that tied things at 6-6. Lindor and Stanton were jawing at each other as the Yankee rounded the bases, leading to both benches clearing and meeting on the field.
7. In a fitting end, Lindor hit his third home run of the night in the bottom of the eighth — becoming the second Mets shortstop to ever do so — to give the Mets back the lead for good.
Lindor becomes the first player to hit three home runs in one Subway Series game — there have been 139 played in history.
