The Mets closed out this series with the Blue Jays with a 5-4 victory at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon.
Takeaways from the game
1) Pete Alonso has been absolutely electric since he won the Home Run Derby. He has five homers since the All-Star break, and his latest tied the game for the Mets in the bottom of the sixth inning, 3-3. It was a rope to left as he continues to come up with a hot bat.
2) Jeff McNeil had some pinch-hit magic in the sixth as well. He laced a two-run double in the right-center field gap to give the Mets their lead back. The hit was also off former Met Jacob Barnes.
3) Rich Hill made his Mets debut on Sunday, and he proved he can get out of trouble. The veteran left-hander allowed three leadoff doubles in the first four innings, but no runs came across. However, in the top of the sixth, Hill couldn’t get through the lineup for the third time, as he was hit for three runs – Seth Lugo allowed a hit that scored two and added to his total. Overall, his final line was three earned on five hits and two walks, while striking out one over five innings. Not too shabby.
4) Trevor May had a bit of a predicament in the top of the eighth inning that needed Aaron Loup to eventually get out of. The Jays scored one run on three straight hits. May settled down and got two outs before Loup came in to close the door and leave with the lead.
5) Edwin Diaz struck out three and walked one in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his 21st save of the season.
