With MLB about to crack down on pitchers who use illegal sticky substances on the baseball, Mets ace Jacob deGrom found himself a target of an accusation on Sunday.
And deGrom’s teammates stepped up in rapid succession to call that accusation nonsense.
Twitter user @DoyersDave posted a video of deGrom during Saturday night’s start against the Padres in San Diego where deGrom briefly touched his glove with his right hand.
@DoyersDave wrote:
“Jacob Decheats or since it’s not Bauer or Cole, we don’t care? Lol”
Both Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer have been accused of using illegal sticky substances, but no credible accusation against deGrom has ever been brought.
In response to the accusation, a line of Mets — tagging one another on Twitter — said deGrom does not use any illegal substances on the baseball.
“I promise you he doesn’t use anything,” wrote Tomas Nido. “If he did they would be lucky to even foul tip the ball cc: @McCannon33”
To this, James McCann said:
“I can confirm. The goat is substance-free. Can you imagine if he did use something? cc: @STRO”
Marcus Stroman then weighed in:
“I can confirm as well! deGrom is the goat goat! cc: @tai_walker”
Said Taijuan Walker:
“I can confirm too! The goat doesn’t need it!! CC: @IamTrevorMay”
Noted Trevor May:
“I can also confirm, he’s just way better than all of us. Confirm? CC@KPILLAR4”
Kevin Pillar then weighed in, putting his paycheck on the line while tagging Mets owner Steve Cohen:
“I’d bet my paycheck on it that he doesn’t use anything. He might be from a different planet though cc: @StevenACohen2”
