The Los Angeles Rams activated Cam Akers to the 53-man roster on Christmas, showing their holiday spirit at this time of year. It’s an impressive feat for Akers, who is just five months removed from tearing his Achilles.
The second-year back has been practicing with the team, but it has yet to be determined if he’s able to return to action in the regular season. Sean McVay shared that Akers could make his season debut on Sunday versus the Baltimore Ravens.
With there being only two games remaining on the schedule, Matthew Stafford said he knows that Akers is champing at the bit to get back on the field.
“He’s done a nice job. He’s been working really hard. Obviously, in my mind, a miraculous recovery. What he’s been able to do is pretty special. I know he’s anxious to get out there. Have no idea when we’re going to get him back, or if (we are). Just happy for him as a person and as a player that he’s feeling as good as he’s feeling. Let the medical staff and coaches and G.M.s and all that kind of stuff figure that out,” Stafford told reporters Wednesday. “But I know he’s happy to be out there with us. We’re happy to have him out there. As far as what I’m seeing from him, really only have we gone fast one time where he’s been out there. He’s doing his own stuff on the side and looking good and all that kind of stuff, but last week, he got a little bit of run in there and he looked good to me. So just happy for him more than anything.”
Of course, when you are dealing with a player with a serious injury like a torn Achilles, you have to be cautious with them. That is especially true when it’s a player like Akers, who is viewed as a long-term piece for the offense.
Also, Sony Michel has performed admirably well at running back over the past month, so there shouldn’t be any rush to insert Akers back into the offense. Having Akers fully healthy for a playoff run should be the ultimate goal for the Rams.
While Akers continues to defy the odds that were stacked against him, Stafford and his other teammates realize how anxious he is to have the ball in his hands again.
