The Toronto Maple Leafs brought in some more depth and grit on Tuesday by acquiring forward Kyle Clifford in a trade with the St. Louis Blues in exchange for future considerations.

Clifford cleared waivers earlier on Tuesday prior to the trade and will be assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

The 30-year-old has spent the past two seasons with the Blues, registering four goals and four assists over 52 games.

Clifford is no stranger to the Maple Leafs organization, having played for the club in 2019-20 after a mid-season trade from the Los Angeles Kings that also landed goaltender Jack Campbell in Toronto. During his first stint with the blue and white, Clifford scored one goal and added two assists in 16 games. The Ayr, Ont., native also racked up 23 penalty minutes for good measure.

Known for his toughness, Clifford has contributed 65 goals, 75 assists and 872 PIMs over his 728 career NHL games, winning the Stanley Cup twice as a member of the Kings in 2012 and 2014. He figures to give Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe another option on his fourth line.
