Jun. 21—NASHUA, N.H. — Cam Varney combined with three relievers to pitch a seven-hitter as the Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the Nashua Silver Knights 3-0 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game on Sunday.
Varney (Mitchell) allowed three hits over five innings with two strikeouts and three walks to even his record at 1-1. Randy Reyes allowed two hits over two innings and Montville’s Kenny Heon (Mitchell) and Kalib Clark (Post) each allowed one hit over an inning. Clark earned his third save of the season.
Norwich (13-9) took a 1-0 lead on Tremayne Cobb’s (Hartford) sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Loriga (Elite Squad Academy) singled home John Mesagno (ECSU) and Cobb in the sixth. Andy Martin (Elite Squad) had two hits for the Sea Unicorns.
Saturday’s game against Nashua was suspended by rain in the top of the fourth inning with Norwich leading 2-1. The game will pick up at that point on Friday at 5 p.m. The nine-inning game will be followed by the scheduled seven-inning game.
The Worcester Bravehearts beat the Sea Unicorns 8-5 on Friday night. Mesagno was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Hunter Yaworski (Mitchell) had a pinch-hit, two-run double for Norwich.
Schooners
— The Mystic Schooners lost 8-6 to the Newport Gulls in the NECBL. East Lyme’s Trystan Levesque (Rhode Island) pitched four scoreless innings for the Schooners (6-6). He allowed three hits, struck out six and walked none. Luke Shilger (Maryland) scored twice for Mystic.
Brendan Cumming (Princeton) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Schooners beat the Valley Blue Sox 6-5 on Saturday night. Barry Walsh (Boston College), who led off the inning with a single, scored the winning run. Mystic (6-5) led 5-1 after eight but Valley scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) and Walsh homered, Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook) had two hits and Cumming scored twice and drove in two runs for Mystic.
The Schooners lost to the Bristol Blues, 6-5, on Friday night. Christopher Brito (Rutgers) and Jerry Huntzinger (Xavier) had two hits each for Mystic (5-5).
Auto racing
— Four of the eight scheduled races at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday were held before rain ended racing. John O’Sullivan of Salem won the 20-lap Legends race, Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon won the 25-lap Speedbowl Trucks race, Tommy Silva of Groton won the 25-lap Mini Stocks race and Buddy Sload won the 25-lap ATQMRA race.
— Bryan Narducci of Colchester won the 40-lap SK Modified race on Friday night at Stafford Speedway. The win was Narducci’s first at Stafford. Four local drivers finished the 20-lap SK Light Modified race with Derek Debbis of Oakdale leading the way with a third-place finish. Amanda West of Colchester was sixth, Tyler Barry of Griswold was ninth and Alexander Pearl of Salem was 22nd. Chris Meyer of North Franklin finished fifth in the 20-lap Street Stock race.
