Jul. 8—LAURELDALE — Pitchers Ethan Hannevig and Hunter Deichert combined on a four-hit shutout and Kayden Lengle and Donovan Copeland drove home runs as Pine Grove defeated Muhlenberg 3-0 Wednesday in an opening-round game of the Schuylkill-Berks American Legion Baseball League playoffs.

With the victory, Pine Grove will travel today to top-seeded Hamburg, which advanced in the double-elimination format with a 5-2 victory over Schuylkill Valley.

Pine Grove scored twice in the second inning and once in the sixth to back Hannevig, who pitched six innings and struck out 10, and Deichert, who tossed the seventh inning and allowed two hits.

Hannevig led the Grovers’ offense with a double. Lengle scored a run in addition to his RBI.

In Wednesday’s other opening-round games, Southern Area edged Valley View 7-6 in eight innings, while Wyomissing downed Kutztown 12-2 in five innings.

All eight playoff qualifiers will play against today.
