Apr. 3—Alyssa Irons is back on the mound for the Monmouth softball team this season.
The senior is already 5-0 on the young season with a 1.93 ERA and has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week twice.
Irons, a Jefferson graduate, has appeared in six games with four starts. She has pitched 32.2 innings and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 21 hits with nine walks and 33 strikeouts.
Irons gave up runs in her first four appearances, but none in the last two covering 6.2 innings. She earned her first MAAC Pitcher of the Week on March 22.
Irons went 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA in Monmouth’s opening weekend March 20 and 21. In the win over Canisius on March 20, she tossed all nine innings with seven strikeouts.
The next day, Irons pitched 12 total innings with 11 strikeouts, picking up the win in both.
Last weekend, Irons went 2-0 over the weekend with a 1.80 ERA. She also picked up a save on Sunday in Monmouth’s 4-0 weekend over Quinnipiac.
Irons tossed 11.2 total innings, allowing just six hits and three earned runs. The senior struck out 15 batters, including nine in her win on Saturday.
She captured the MAAC Pitcher of the Week again on Monday.
It was the ninth time she has won the award in her two seasons at Monmouth.
Monmouth (7-1) is in a pause in team activities following a positive COVID-19 result within the program and subsequent contact tracing. The Hawks will be eligible to compete again on April 9.
In the 2019 season, Irons was selected the MAAC Pitcher of the Year, All-MAAC First Team, NFCA Third Team All-Region, All-ECAC Second Team and NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete.
In a shortened 2020 season, she made 13 appearances, including 11 starts.
Irons registered a 7-5 record with a 2.53 ERA.
