Jun. 26—A familiar problem plaguing the Duluth Huskies cost them another win in Northwoods League play, as Huskies pitching allowed nine runs over the last two innings in an 11-5 loss to the Waterloo Bucks Friday, June 25, 2021 at Wade Stadium.
Duluth led 5-2 after seven innings but the first six Waterloo batters reached in the top of the eighth on three walks, two singles and a double. Emiliano Gonzalez’s two-run double gave Waterloo the lead, and a third run scored unearned on the play.
Any hope of getting back into the game was extinguished when the Bucks scored four more runs in the ninth inning on four hits and two more walks. The Huskies have issued a NWL-worst 171 walks in their first 25 games, an average of nearly seven per game. Friday, they had eight.
Garrett McGowan was 3-for-3 with an RBI and drew two walks to lead the offense for Waterloo (18-8). Curren Larson earned the win in relief.
For Duluth (8-18), four players had two hits apiece. Mike Boeve was one of them, and added two RBIs.
Duluth continues its homestand Saturday at 5:05 p.m. vs. Bismarck.
