Although we can’t help but love Holly Willoughby in a floral dress (her Ghost and M&S numbers are add-to-basket worthy), the 41-year-old presenter opted for a different type of pattern for hosting This Morning on Wednesday: a fitted checked skirt.

Posting to her 7.6 million Instagram followers, Willoughby shared a full-length picture, complete with black pointed court shoes, with the caption “Morning Wednesday… see you on @thismorning at 10am… #hwstyle💁🏼‍♀️✨ shirt by @insidejigsaw skirt @lkbennettlondon ✨”

Willoughby wore the navy-and-white gingham LK Bennett skirt with a classic white Jigsaw shirt, allowing the checks to do the talking. At £199, the Maren Check Pencil Skirt might be a bit of an investment piece, but its “classic with a twist” style and flattering fit means that it can be worn in a variety of ways.

Fans of the style will be happy to hear that it’s still in stock in most sizes at LK Bennett and John Lewis.

Her latest look is the ideal alternative for those unsure of going all in with patterns such as florals or animal prints, but who are ready for a lift this spring.

Don’t fancy fighting with vibrant colours and animal prints? Checks offer an alternative way to comfortably ease your way into wearing prints without feeling like a peacock. Not into the feminine florals that come around every year? Switch it up with gingham pieces for a fresh take on spring style.

Go all-out with a gingham dress as the weather gets warmer, or wear it like Willoughby with a neutral accompanying colour such as white, navy or grey when you need to layer for the single-digit chill. Either way, expect to see a lot more gingham this summer.
