Medal table | Olympic schedule | Olympic news

Day 4 in Paris brings one of the signature events of the Summer Games.

Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee lead the U.S. women as they seek to secure gold in the women’s gymnastics team final. The U.S. men’s national soccer team, meanwhile looks to advance to the Olympic knockout round for the first time since 2000.

In the pool, there’s more high-stakes action for American and Australian swimmers in medal events. And both the U.S. men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball teams will make their Paris debuts.

All events will stream live on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com. For a complete schedule, click here.

Here are five featured events Tuesday:

Olympic All-Around gold medalists Biles (Rio, 2016) and Lee (Tokyo, 2021) seek to lead Team USA back to the top of the podium in the women’s gymnastics team final.

USA settled for silver in Tokyo after then-reigning all-around champion Biles withdrew from the final with a case of the “twisties.” She’s back on top of her game and posted the highest score in qualifying. She plans to compete in all four events on Tuesday.

With another Olympic champion in Lee helping lead a deep and talented team, the U.S. women are the favorites to secure gold. Italy, Japan, Brazil and China are among the other teams to watch for medal contention.

Following a disastrous 3-0 loss to host France to start Olympic play, Team USA is on the verge of a trip to the knockout round for the first time since 2000 in Sydney. The Americans bounced back from that loss to France with a 4-1 win over New Zealand in the second game of group play and look to clinch a spot in the knockout round in its group play finale Tuesday against Guinea.

Win and there’s a very good chance they’re in. USA is second in the Group A standings behind France and has a two-goal edge in goal differential over third-place New Zealand, which has to face France in Tuesday’s other Group A finale. The U.S. could conceivably clinch with a tie or a loss as well. But a win over the last-place team in the group would make things considerably simpler. The program’s second-ever trip to the Olympic knockout round is at stake.

Three Olympic champions will be crowned in the pool on Tuesday. The women’s 100-meter backstroke final (2:57 p.m. ET) is the first medal event on a busy day of heats and semifinals. The men’s 800-meter freestyle final will follow shortly after (3:03 p.m.) before the men’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay final caps the day in the pool at 3:59.

All three Tokyo medalists are back in a blockbuster backstroke final including American bronze medalist Regan Smith, who’s among the favorites for gold on Tuesday. Fellow American Katherine Berkoff is also in the mix. Tokyo gold medalist Kaylee McKeown (Australia) and silver medalist Kylie Masse (Canada) also project to contend for the top spot on the podium.

U.S. endurance specialist Robert Finke looks to defend his crown from Tokyo and secure a second consecutive gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle final. Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri project as his top competition. The U.S. will field a team in the relay medal event, where a podium appearance would be considered an upset. Great Britain is the favorite to defend its Tokyo crown.

The traditional U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams get a break on Monday. Bring on the halfcourt. 3×3 basketball makes its Paris debut on Tuesday, and both U.S. teams will be in action.

The U.S. women will tip the event off against Germany seeking to defend their gold from Tokyo with a completely new roster. Hailey Van Lith and 3×3 specialist Cierra Burdick return from a team that won gold at the 2023 World Cup. Cameron Brink was also slated to return, but tore her ACL while playing with the Los Angeles Sparks. Her Sparks teammate Dearica Hamby replaces her on the roster rounded out by Rhyne Howard.

The U.S. men will tip off against Serbia to cap the day’s action in search of their first Olympic medal of any kind in the event. USA failed to qualify a men’s team for the sport’s Olympic debut in Tokyo. A familiar face leads the team in Paris. Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette leads a U.S. team featuring fellow ex-college players Canyon Barry, Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis. Barry is a sharpshooter and the son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry.

USA has a chance at a first on Tuesday. The U.S. women are in the final four of rugby sevens and can secure the nation’s first medal of any kind in the event that’s been held at the Olympics since 2016.

First up, USA takes on New Zealand in the first semifinal of the day (9:30 a.m. ET, USA). If New Zealand wins, USA advances to the bronze medal match (1 p.m. ET, E!, USA) later in the day against the loser of the other semifinal between Canada and Australia. And yes, they play multiple rugby games in a single day.

If USA wins, it will advance to face the Canada-Australia semifinal winner with the gold medal at stake (1:45 p.m. ET on E!, USA).
